Content: South Pittsburg, Tennessee history is being preserved by the South Pittsburg, Tennessee Historic Preservation Society, Inc. We are a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of history and historic resourses in our city. Projects include, restoration of Princess Theatre, Chapel on the Hill, placement of Jobyna Lancaster Ralston - Arlen historic Tennessee Historical marker, preservation of City Cemetery and other parts of our history. Our Society also works with our city leaders and the public to bring attention to the need of historic preservation in our community, which was founded on the iron trade industry. Included in this was coal and coke mining up the Sequatchie Valley and other parts of Marion County, Tennessee including Orme. Our location on the Tennessee River and the Jasper Branch Railroad, formerly of the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway, was vital to the establishment of our city. This railroad connects to the main line of the CSX Transportation, Inc. railroad at nearby Bridgeport, Alabama. In between Bridgeport and South Pittsburg is the community of Richard City, which is now a part of our city. It was here that Dixie Portland Cement operated a plant and where silent western movie star Tom Mixx worked before becoming a motion picture actor. Our Society raises money for our projects through an annual Christmas Tour of Homes, Trash and Treasure sale, sell of the 1899 South Pittsburg Hustler newspaper reprint, cookbook and postcards.
